『범망경』 주석서에 나타난 계체론 연구

Abstract

As a representative text regarding the bodhisattva precepts of Mahayana Buddhism, the Brahmajāla Sūtra (Brahmāʼs Net Sutra) is a sutra about the bodhisattva precepts that expounds on the essence of the precepts, which centers around the mind’s inherent buddha nature. This is clearly expressed in the phrase “xindi jie (⼼地戒; mind field precepts),” which is in the sutra’s original title, Fanwang jing Lúshènà Fó shuo pusa xindi jie pindishi (梵網經盧舎那佛說菩薩⼼地戒品第⼗). However, two texts from the many commentaries on the Brahmajāla Sūtra ― Pusajie yishu(Commentary on the Meaning of the Bodhisattva Precepts) by Tiantai Zhiyi and Fanwangjing pusa jieben shu (Commentary to the Code of the Bodhisattva Precepts in the Brahmāʼs Net Sutra) by Xianshou Fazang ―discuss the essence of the precepts, using expressions like “temporary Form Dharma as an expedient teaching” and “neither form nor mind.” This is a different approach from the term “essence of the precepts based on Mind Dharma.” This study focuses on differences in how to interpret the es-sence of the precepts as it is reflected in commentaries on the Brahmajāla Sūtra; it delves into reasons why these differences originated according to the commentaries’ authors, and explores how each interpretation is different from the term “xindijie (mind field precepts)” found in the Brahmajāla Sūtra. In addition, based on Wonhyo’s Beommanggyeong bosal gyebon sagi (Commentary on the Chapter of the Bodhisattva Precepts in the Brahmāʼs Net Sutra ) ―which is thought to add commentaries from “the essence of the precepts based on Mind Dharma” ― this study explores its similarities with and differences from the interpretations of Tiantai Zhiyi and Xianshou Fazang. In this way this study tries to understand how interpretations on the essence of the precepts influenced commentaries on the Brahmajāla Sūtra. By exploring the existing bibliographical and philological studies on the Brahmajāla Sūtra from more diverse angles, this study may present a refreshing perspective on research into the bodhisattva precepts, and survey the developmental pattern of texts about the bodhisattva precepts, one of the characteristics of East Asian Buddhism.
