Abstract
Chan-bul-ga(Korean Buddhist hymns), which emerged during the modernization of Korean Buddhism, was established as a form of Korean Buddhist music after Japanese colonial period. Amidst the rapid societal changes occurring from the end of the Joseon Dynasty to the Japanese occupation, it is important to address the emergence of this new religious music style of Korean Buddhist hymns as a social phenomenon in addition to its religious and musical meanings. Korean Buddhism resisted the colonial policies of the Japanese Government- General of Korea, such as the temple ordinance, during the Japanese colonial period, and continued the defense of traditional Korean Buddhism and the independence movement. In addition, Korean Buddhist hymns were created in response to the Enlightenment and the monks' desire to reform Korean Buddhism, and were presented as a new way of spreading the word. This research examines the motivations of Baek Yong-sung, Kwon Sang-roh, and Cho Hak-yu, the authors of Korean Buddhist hymns during the Japanese occupation of Korea. On this basis, the meaning of Buddhist hymns created by Buddhist monks is explored.
