Abstract
In contemporary society, prominent athletes are often expected to bear a higher level of moral responsibility due to their considerable social influence. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that such an expectation cannot be conceptually and philosophically justified. To this end, the study first distinguishes between the narrow and broad senses of the role model concept, as well as between its descriptive and normative meanings, in order to examine whether athletes can genuinely serve as moral exemplars. Next, it explores three major positions on this issue—moral exceptionalism, moral generalism, and moral exemplarism—and discusses the theoretical implications of Wellman’s two perspectives on moral exemplarism. Finally, by critically analyzing the conceptual, ethical, practical, and epistemological limitations inherent in moral exemplarism, the study argues that this theory fails to provide a philosophically sustainable framework for explaining the moral status of prominent athletes. This study redefines the moral status of athletes not as moral exemplars but as role-specific role models, contending that their moral responsibility lies not in exhibiting universal moral virtue beyond the field, but in embodying the internal values of sport within the field of play.
