PURPOSE. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effect of zirconia primer on the shear bond strength of conventional resin cements to yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) ceramic and to compare its bond strength with that of chemically adhesive resin cement. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Sixty-three Y-TZP ceramic cylinders sandblasted with 50 μm grain sized Al2O3 particles were divided into three groups. In Group A, Multilink, Resicem and Superbond C&B without primer were used. In Group B, the same cements of Group A were used with manufacturers’ recommended zirconia primers (Metal/Zirconia primer for Multilink, AZ Primer for Resicem and Zirconia Liner for Superbond C&B). In Group C, chemically adhesive resin cements (Panavia F2.0, Clearfill SA luting, Zirconite) without primer were used. The mixed resin cement with cylindrical shape (ϕ 3 mm × 3 mm) was placed onto the Y-TZP ceramic cylinders (ϕ 9 mm × 15 mm). All specimens (n = 7) were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 100 days. Shear bond strengths were measured by a universal testing machine with a cross head speed of 0.5 mm/min. A scanning electron microscope was used to investigate the fractured surfaces. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and multiple comparison Scheffé test (α = 0.05). RESULTS. The shear bond strength of Group B was significantly higher than that of Group A except for Resicem. The bond strengths of Group B and C were varied, depending on the materials, but there was no significant difference among the cements of the Group B and C except for Superbond C&B with Zirconia Liner. CONCLUSION. For the bonding of zirconia restoration, the application of zirconia primer is recommended when conventional resin cement is used, and the use of chemically adhesive resin cements is comparable to that of conventional resin cement with zirconia primer
