『호랑이를 덫에 가두면』은 한국계 미국 여성 아동문학 작가 태 켈러(Tae Keller)의 대표작 중 하나로, 한국계 미국인 여성의 곤경에 대한 작가의 사고와 한국계 여성 공동체를 구축하려는 염원을 작품에 구현하였다. 본문은 『호랑이를 덫에 가두면』에서 제시하는 공동체 사상에 초점을 맞추어 작품 속의 문화 공동체, 혈연 공동체 및 정신 공동체에 대한 분석을 통해 소설 속 인물들 간의 상호 협력 관계를 탐구하였고, 한국계 여성의 생존 곤경에 대한 태 켈러의 사고와 식민주의, 인종차별주의에 대한 비판을 서술하였다. 첫째, 소설에서 나타나는 한국의 전통문화는 릴리 가족과 한국의 연결 과정을 대표하며, 주류 사회의 권력 아래에서 민족 문화의 상실에 맞서 민족 공동체를 구축하도록 돕는다. 둘째, 할머니와 어머니는 릴리가 위험에서 벗어날 수 있도록 서로 다른 방식으로 릴리를 도와주고, 서로 다른 각도에서 릴리를 성장시키는 역할을 한다. 이 두 인물은 모두 릴리와 같은 혈연 공동체에 속하며, 이는 릴리가 성장하고 치유 받을 수 있는 가장 기본적인 요소 중 하나이다. 셋째, 정신 공동체에서 썬빈 마을 주민들은 릴리의 가족들과는 아무런 혈연관계가 없는 사람들이지만, 그들은 항상 릴리의 가족들을 보호하기 위해 최선을 다하고 문제를 고려하며, 위험에 직면할 때 릴리 가족의 이익을 최우선으로 생각하여 릴리의 가족들과 함께 근심과 행복을 나눈다.
Abstract
When You Trap a Tiger is a representative work of Korean American children's literature by author Tae Keller. It reflects the author’s contemplation of the challenges faced by Korean American women and her call for the construction of a Korean American women's community. This paper focuses on the concept of community in When You Trap a Tiger, analyzing the cultural, bloodline, and spiritual communities within the work to reveal the mutual support among the characters. It also explores Keller’s reflections on the survival struggles of Korean American women and her critique of colonialism and racism. Firstly, the novel illustrates how Korean traditional culture connects Lily’s family to Korea. It represents a form of resistance against cultural amnesia imposed by mainstream culture and contributes to the construction of an ethnic community. Secondly, Lily's grandmother and mother help her escape danger in different ways, each contributing to her growth from distinct perspectives. They all belong to the same bloodline community as Lily, which is a crucial factor in her healing and development. Finally, within the spiritual community, the residents of Sunbeam, though not related by blood to Lily’s family, still go to great lengths to protect them. When faced with challenges, they prioritize the well-being of Lily’s family, sharing in both their worries and their joys.
