Abstract

This study analyzed the symbolism and narrative function of the tiger in Tae Keller’s 2021 Newbery Medal winner, When You Trap a Tiger. Based on examining the various symbolic meanings of a tiger in traditional Korean folktales, the researchers explored how this symbol is reimagined as a narrative of identity exploration and healing for Korean Americans. The findings revealed that the tiger in When You Trap a Tiger is portrayed as a transcendent being that moves between fantasy and reality, a psychological symbol reflecting Lily’s inner self, and an embodiment of family relationships that mediates intergenerational memory and identity. This study categorizes the tiger’s characteristics into three domains—fantasticality, internalization, family relationship and identity restoration. Through this lens, the researchers found that this novel is shown to reconstruct the traditional tiger narrative into a story of cultural identity and healing for Korean Americans. Furthermore, the symbolic transformation of the tiger reveals its significance in restoring cultural memory, facilitating intergenerational reconciliation, and shaping Korean identity across time and space.
