Abstract
Meanwhile, fantasy and the Taoist magic revealed in “Jeon Uchijeon” have been discussed in terms of Korean literature records and legends, and the influence of the Chinese novel Sinma “Monkey King.” While this paper re-examined the relationship between “JeonWoochiJeon” and the preceding text, it tried to clarify not only the previously revealed text of “JeonWoochiJeon” but also the several parts shared in the utilization of fantasy and the Taoist magic of novel Sinma “Yeoseonoesa”. In “JeonWoochiJeon”, Jeon Woochi acquired the ability to create changes up to 108 types after swallowing ‘Hojeong (狐精)’ of a fox and learned ‘Sanggwon (上卷) Cheonseo (天書)’(=first volume of Cheonseo) to freely practice Taoist magic. In particular, the facts that the setting that Cheonseo is divided to three volumes and that the aspect of Jeon Woochi learning Cheonseo through the Nine-tailed Fox were understood as the characteristics of “JeonWoochiJeon” However, this setting was also confirmed in “Yeoseonoesa” and accordingly attention was paid to it. In Yeoseonoesa, Cheonseo was divided into three volumes, and just as Jeon Woochi learned the first volume of Cheonseo by way of the Nine-tailed Fox, Dangsea learned the first volume of Cheonseo through Hyeonneonangrang. Therefore, the two works were identical in the aspects. Miindo in which Juseonrang of “JeonWoochiJeon” was drawn and Cheonakbyeongpung in which 36 beautiful women of “Yeoseonoesa” drawn embodied a similar imagination. It was confirmed that imagination with a sense of entity brought about a sense of ‘Jealousy’ to Minssi of “JeonWoochiJeon” and Yang Guifei of “Yeoseonoesa”. It was also identical in that humans in the real world were able to control imagination. However, humans in the real world showed helplessness in front of higher-level Taoism than ‘imagination.’ Minssi and Wang Yeon Hee of “JeonWoochiJeon” and Hojeong and Hojeong’s family and Jangjihwan of “Yeoseonoesa” experienced Taoist magic of changing people to beasts. They were all humans in spirit, but their bodies were turned into beasts, and they could not speak human language. Therefore, the rights to escape life and death for the subjects of Taoist magic belonged to the Taoist magicians. In a nutshell, “JeonWoochiJeon” and “Yeoseonoesa” shows the common aspects in the setting that Taoist magic is superior to ‘imagination’ and the subjects of Taoist magic cannot speak human language, and in the story that the authority to return the subjects of Taoist magic to the original existence exclusively belongs to the Taoist magicians. In addition, “JeonWoochiJeon” and “Yeoseonoesa” revealed similar imaginations in the scene of the capture of the gold crossbeam and the part that it appeared at once in the dreams of and made many characters to accept fantasy as reality. Like this, the common set identified in fantasy and the Taoist magic of “JeonWoochiJeon” and “Yeoseonoesa” indicates that it is necessary to more actively consider the novel Sinma in preceding narrations that influenced “JeonWoochiJeon”.
