Abstract

This article has taken a look at the functions of Mudang-gut (shaman dance) for consolation and healing with the main focus on observed data surveyed by the writer. First of all, the article suggests functions of Mudang-gut on two aspects of consolation and healing. One is to ‘gain the assurance on future and be consoled’ and the other is to ‘resolve the clogged and mingled ones’. And through this endeavor, people think that they are enlightened of paradox of a meager being possessing a strong power from the gut site, and gain a new power by departing from the reality. Therefore, it is meaningless to dispute whether the gut (shaman dance) is superstitious or not. As we live on by forgetting the precious ones, the gut is even more necessary. Those precious ones are not treated as such when they are in the possession, but their true value are felt after losing them. If it is neglected for it is a superstition or interfering with the modernization, it may lose the path to return to the past and un-realistic status. It is like losing the unlimited nature of our intrinsic value that is contained within. Now is the time to realize the value of the gut and bring back the dynamics of the gut. The more people know about the gut, the more meaningful it gets, and the more the gut is protected, the more enriched of our lives. It opens up the different level of our lives and the world of universal harmony with humans and gods united as one ultimately.
