본 논문은 기독교철학자 J. K. A. Smith가 지난 십년 간 저술해 온 문화적 예전 시리즈인 「하나님 나라를 욕망하라」(2016), 「하나님 나라를 상상하라」(2018), 「왕을 기다리며」(2019)에 담긴 기독교교육 및 기독교적 형성의 목적과 과제에 관한 고찰이다. 그가 생각하는 온전한 기독교 교육에 대한 제안은 오늘날 기독교교육이 변형된 기독교세계관 모형과 주지주의적 인간론에 근거하고 있음에 대한 비판과 함께 이루어진다. 기독교를 사상체계로 축소시킨 세계관적 접근과 주지주의적인 인간론은 노련한 욕망교수법이라 할 수 있는 세속적 예전의 형성적 힘을 간과하고, 이론과 실천, 내용과 방법을 분리될 수 있는 것으로 여겨 방법과 형식의 진정성과 참신함을 추구하다가 세속적 예전에 공모함으로써, 급진적인 제자를 형성하는 데 부적절한 토대가 되었음을 지적한다. 고대 기독교의 영적형성의 자원과 신체성을 포함한 피조물성과 서사적인 존재라고 하는 인간의 특성을 간과한 탈육신화된 기독교교육의 모습을 비판하며 Smith가 제시하는 기독교교육은 예배를 통한 사회적 상상력의 회복이며, 예전에 풍성히 담긴 이야기에 몰입함으로써 지각의 배경이 새로워지고, 기독교 공동체의 감수성을 흡입하고 그 실천에 참여하는, 특정한 방식으로 느끼고 기울어져 행동하게 하는 하나님 나라 공동체의 아비투스와 성품을 지닌 그리스도인의 형성을 목적으로 한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to understand the series of cultural liturgy written by J. K. A. Smith, professor of Philosophy at Calvin university. Through his three volumes, he attempted to depict what Christian education and Christian formation should look like when it is based on a more holistic view of human beings in accord with Scriptures and his philosophical anthropology. He envisions a new way of approaching Christian education by restoring the relationship between worship and Christian education in that the human being is viewed primarily homo adorans. He does so by engaging in critical reflection on so-called 'a worldview model' highly upheld in Christian educational fields. He gives preeminence and primacy to affect over cognition in order to explain how human beings operate in the world, and suggests that human beings are narrative beings and bodily creatures. They are directed by the ultimate desires and telos more than by what they consciously think. Therefore, based on the view of human beings as homo adorans, he argues that the purpose of Christian education is sanctification of perception and acquisition of social imaginary inspired by story-filled worship and Christian habitus through participation in repetitive practice and liturgy in which people can immerse themselves in Christian narratives. To offer re-enchanted Christianity is a great service to our disenchanted secular world.
