지난 수년간 한국의 이미지와 정체성을 주제로 연구해온 필자에게 대한민국 역사박물관은 가장 흥미롭고 중요한 연구소재이면서도 이전의 연구대상과는 비교할 수 없을 정도로 매우 복합적인 연구대상이다. 박물관은 수많은 매체 형식들이 모두 모여 있고 각각의 시각대상들이 구성하는 공간(들)과 그것들을 감싸고 있는 공간 전체, 나아가 박물관을 품고 있는 더 큰 공간인 국가상징거리에 이르기까지 매우 복합적인 공간에 대한 종합적 고찰을 요구하는 작업이기 때문이다. 첫 시작점으로 이 연구에서는 한국의 근현대사의 재구성을 통해 국가의 성격을 규정한 대한민국역사박물관에 대하여 역사와 정체성의 재현방식이라는 주제로 그 전시구조와 전시형식 등을 살펴본다. 구체적으로, 우선 대한민국역사박물관의 건립 배경과 전시 체계 및 구성을 상세히 살펴본다. 이어서 리치(Henrietta Lidchi)가 민족지학 박물관(ethnographic museum) 연구에 도입한 두 가지 관점, 즉 전시 공학(the poetics of exhibiting)과 전시 정치학(the politics of exhibiting)적 관점에서 대한민국역사박물관의 함의를 논의한다.
Abstract
A museum is where myriad mediums are gathered. Moreover, the spaces that each visual subjects form and the space that covers all these other spaces, and further on the bigger space of national symbolic street, that carries the museum, all these complex spaces require a comprehensive thought. This study explores the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History that regulated the national characteristic through reconstruction of contemporary Korean history, through the representation of historical memory and identity. In order to achieve this goal, I analyze the cultural background of this new museum and further the details of spaces of exhibit including objects, their arrangements, and other special features of the museum. In the process of investigation, the so-called the poetics of exhibiting and the politics of exhibiting are considered as a guiding methodology of this research.
