Abstract
This paper discusses the regional identity problem and the memory structure of Incheon by examining the exhibition narratives of three museums(Bupyeong History Museum, The Museum of Korea Emigration History, Sudoguksan Museum of Housing&Living) that are located in Incheon. Trying to approach this task, I use methodological framework of multidirectional memory which is devised by M. Rothberg. This paper classifies the narratives of public history in museums as isolated memory, competing memory, and mnemonic solidarity. An appropriate solution for the narratives of isolated memory would be collecting the testimony that is related to exhibited objects, since social historical background secures the mnemonic space for multidirectional memory and turns museums into ‘contact zones.’ After resolving the problem of isolation, there comes another struggle of competing memories between individuals or groups. As the methods of historical presentation, this paper suggests the revival of historical landscape and the turn to experiencing exhibition. In conclusion, I address that the procedure of resolving upcoming problems such as banalization or normalization of individual memories after the formation of mnemonic solidarity is the same process of forming the regional identity that can be acknowledged in global horizon.
