Abstract

Background Change of environment under world economic depression affects the economy of Ulsan industrial city which takes a role as the motive power for economic development of Korea with three main forces - automobile, shipbuilding and petrochemistry. Export of Ulsan at early of last year decreased 30% compared to the previous year and it is the biggest width of decrease. An employment situation viewed by the number of employees also shows the seriousness and the extensive restructuring is encouraged by the government. In addition, following the standard of the OECD, when a statistic that 2 of museum or art gallery are appropriate among an one hundred thousand population is considered, 24 of museums or art galleries are needed in case of Ulsan. However Ulsan has 9 enrolled museums (National cultural infrastructure directory, 2015) and there is no municipal art museum, and it cannot satisfy the standard of the OECD so that the development of infrastructures meeting the increasing cultural needs of Ulsan citizens is strongly needed. Considering these two elements, as a method to overcome the economic situation and a dark outlook of Ulsan, the building of a Ulsan museum of Arts which has been long-cherished wish of Ulsan citizen can be a discovery of new growth engine industry and a trigger of growing service industry. Methods Considerations for successful opening of Ulsan museum of Arts are analyzed and the operational directions to go as a art museum of an industrial city, Ulsan are suggested by this research through the literature research of existing articles and data. Visions of art museums located on the metropolitan cities of Korea and present condition of urban museums of arts in Ulsan are analyzed and exemplary cases of art museums located on the foreign industrial cities are reviewed to deduct the implications for the result. Result Implication and direction are deducted by analyzing the current visions of art museums located on metropolitan cities in Korea and examples of art museums in foreign industrial cities according to literature researches and advanced researches. Conclusion The identity to aim and architectural, programmatic aspects about operational direction of Ulsan museum of arts are suggested by analyzing the considerations for successful opening of the Ulsan museum of arts.
