Abstract

This article reconsiders religion not as a system of belief or doctrine but as a material process that emerges in the encounter between body and world. Drawing on affect theory, it foregrounds the mechanism of affect as a central principle of religious formation. First, affect is theorized as a contingent force of heterogeneous, non-linear, and unprogrammed becoming, operating prior to discourse at a pre-linguistic level and exceeding human cognition through its micro-plasticity. Second, affect is examined as a material power rooted in the ‘biological materiality’(animality) of both human and non-human animals, manifesting as an “intransigent” force. Through this dual perspective, the study argues that religion materializes through the circulation of affective economies in embodied processes rather than through abstract systems of meaning. Against this theoretical background, the article analyzes the phenomenon of “New-Jin Monk,” a cultural and religious event that emerged in contemporary Buddhism. As a parody figure originating from popular culture, New-Jin Monk has attracted significant public attention, particularly among younger generations. The case illustrates how affective flows create structured emotions and shape discourses that blur the boundaries between authenticity and performance. By tracing how the New-Jin phenomenon generates the affect of a “fake that feels real,” the study dem정onstrates how Buddhism becomes sensed and embodied as a practice within the circuits of affective economy. In conclusion, religion arises as an event prior to belief or doctrine, through bodily responsiveness and the circulation of affect. Religious experience materializes as the condensation of affect onto signs and bodies, revealing the entanglement of embodiment grounded in biological materiality and contingency. This perspective redefines religion not as a fixed essence but as an embodied event produced through contingent collisions of affect.
