Abstract
This study aimed to compare and analyze the body composition, basic physical fitness, and isokinetic muscle function of the knee in male golfers according to their body mass index (BMI). The study was conducted with 70 male golfers from D Metropolitan City, who were divided into three groups based on BMI: normal weight, overweight, and obese. The results showed that the obese group had significantly higher body weight (F = 67.505, p < .001, η² = 0.669), muscle mass (F = 27.735, p < .001, η² = 0.453), and body fat percentage (F = 24.943, p < .001, η² = 0.427) compared to the normal weight group, and significant differences were also found in thigh and forearm circumference (F = 64.461, p < .001, η² = 0.658; F = 28.799, p < .001, η² = 0.462). In physical fitness, the obese group exhibited significantly lower explosive power in the vertical jump (F = 4.104, p < .05, η² = 0.109) and greater flexibility in the sit-and-reach test (F = 7.946, p < .01, η² = 0.192). Specifically, the normal-weight group showed significantly higher relative strength during left knee extension and right knee flexion (F = 3.527, p < .05, η² = 0.095; F = 3.765, p < .05, η² = 0.101). The findings suggest that BMI significantly affects golfers' physical characteristics and functional fitness, with significant differences in body composition, physical fitness, and knee joint muscle function across BMI levels. Therefore, these findings emphasize the need for customized training programs that focus on improving functional body composition and muscle function rather than just weight reduction.
