Abstract

This study aims to examine ‘Bioregionalism’ as resistance to modern developmentalism in the poetry of Moon Choong-sung, a poet, journalist, and French literature scholar born in Jeju, focusing on his collections published from the late 1980s to the 1990s. Bioregionalism emphasizes the importance of the “region” as an existential and concrete living foundation, regarding it as a place where humans and diverse species cohabitate and political praxis can be enacted. In South Korea, criticism of central-government-led regional development and growing interest in localization and regional ecology emerged in the 1990s. However, remnants of authoritarian developmentalism and the forces of globalization deepened the influence of local elites and corporations, contributing to the disintegration of local communities. Particularly, Jeju Island, stigmatized as the “island of communists” following the Jeju 4․3 and the Korean War, stands out as a region that vividly reveals the historical nature of Korea’s regional development. Moon Choong-sung’s poetry of the late 1980s to the 1990s critically examine the anti-communist developmentalism of military regimes and the globalization through the lens of ecological regionalism. For instance, the stark contrast between the “thatched roofs” and “slate roofs” in his poetry highlights the violence of rural modernization policies and the Saemaul Movement, which contributed to the collapse of the island’s ecosystem. Furthermore, as seen in works addressing ‘sandam’, ‘dolharubang’, and ‘Moksokwon’, Jeju’s accelerated tourism development since the 1970s created contradictions between “preservation” and “disposal,” commodifying the community’s natural environment and traditions. The poet also critiques the oppressive modernity that underpins war, massacres, and developmentalism, focusing on contested sites such as ‘Tap-dong’ and ‘Hallasan’, where conflicts between the state and local communities were most acute. Moreover, through rituals and traditions such as ‘Yeongdeungje’ and ‘simpangdol’, which embody horizontal relationships with nature, Moon Choong-sung’s poetry reveals the spirit of Jeju’s people, who respect nature not as an object of exploitation but as a member of their community. The ecological regionalism in Moon Choong-sung’s poetry is significant as a form of political resistance and literary praxis against state-led anti-communist developmentalism. More broadly, it can be interpreted as resistance to the violence of modernity and civilization-centric thinking, which destroys humanity’s shared resources under the logic of ownership and development.
