Abstract
This study analyzes the returns to various skill dimensions using Mincer's wage function based on data from the Korean Job Dictionary and Wage Survey from 1993 to 2016. The main findings are as follows: First, the return to cognitive skills remained high at 34-44% over 24 years, while returns to physical and sensory skills decreased after the 2000s. The return to data-related functions has steadily increased since the 2000s, suggesting a growing demand for higher-order data functions as technology advances. Second, the average return to over-education (5.2%) is higher than the return to over-experience (1.8%), indicating that education is valued more than experience in the labor market. Third, when skills were not controlled for, the return to formal education was 8.3%. After controlling for skills, it decreased to 5.3%, demonstrating the multi-dimensionality of skill formation. Fourth, women experienced wage penalties of at least 21% compared to men over the 24-year period, with this gap increasing by 2% after the economic crisis. This study provides valuable insights for human resource policy-making by presenting trends in returns to skills over 24 years, along with changes in returns to years of education, years of experience, function types, gender, and firm size.
