Abstract
<Gamoonjang Baby>, a children’s play created from a feminist perspective, has been performed consistently for over 20 years and its feminist messages have influenced contemporary children’s audiences. Nevertheless, there has been no study that has explored the femininity of the children's play. This paper starts from the question of what is the woman in the play, and examines how femininity is constructed in the play through the method of detailed performance analysis. As it is essential to analyze childhood in the study of children's drama, this paper explores femininity by dividing it into two periods: before and after Gamoonjang’s age of 15. During Gamoonjang’s childhood, women are unwelcome and discriminated against from birth because they are daughters. They have a low status in the family and in society. In Gamoonjang’s house, patriarchal power centered on the father controls women, and daughters are expected to conform to ensure their survival. In this reality, through Gamoonjang's symbolic performance, she declares that “the female womb is life and the universe.” During the process, she becomes an object of hatred because she does not obey the patriarch and reveals her menstrual cloth, which is taboo in patriarchy. And while the younger Gamjang celebrates budding female subjectivity, she is still an “unfinished” or “becoming” female subject in that she is unable to resist or question the reality of misogyny. After the age of fifteen, women in the play are constructed as the following: a woman's womb is the source of life, the power to overcome hardships. Meanwhile, misogyny is still rampant in the world around Gamoonjang, but this time she resists it. In the process of dating and marriage, she chooses her own partner and takes control of the relationship. She is also a leader who knows farming, has a vision for it, and implements it, leading to a successful harvest. Lastly, the womb of Gamoonjang, which is the source of life, is also the womb of heaven. That is, the woman is the sky. Patriarchal control and misogyny were ubiquitous in the reality of Gamoonjang's time, but she challenged such dominant ideology with her belief that women are the sky and the womb is the universe. However, although the young Gamjang was in the process of becoming an independent female subject, she was still incomplete. On the other hand, the fifteen-year-old Gamoonjang rejects traditional femininity and grows into a heavenly being, transcending the re ality of misogyny. I wonder how contemporary children will accept the fact that the female subject of Gamoonjang is stably formed not until after her marriage. In traditional society, there was no way for women to survive without obeying the patriarch, so it is revolutionary that Gamoonjang rejects traditional femininity and shows an alternative to reality by finding her own way to survive, even if it is in a mythical space. The dominant ideology of the traditional society revealed in Gamoonjang Baby is still influential today, so that Gamoonjang's agency is meaningful for contemporary girls and children.
