Abstract

The ‘8-Happy & Right Meditation’ program is an 8-session Buddhist-based meditation initiative grounded in the Noble Eightfold Path and Threefold Training (ethics, concentration, wisdom). It promotes psychological well-being while pursuing the Buddhist objectives of alleviating suffering and attaining ultimate happiness. Addressing the side effects (e.g., anxiety, delusion) of conventional psychotherapeutic meditation approaches detached from Buddhist roots, this program integrates ethical practice, systematic cultivation, and accessibility, utilizing Korean Seon Buddhism’s Ganhwaseon for profound insight and practical application. It has the Key Features compared to other mediation programs as the below. 1. Systematic Practice Rooted in Buddhist Orthodoxy: It harmonizes ethics, concentration, and wisdom through the Noble Eightfold Path and Threefold Training, employing Ganhwaseon to experientially explore suffering’s cessation and happiness. 2. Phased Approach and Accessibility: Structured in three phases—‘Happy View’, ‘Happy Insight’, and ‘Happy Awakening’—it facilitates a gradual progression from knowledge to wisdom for participants with meditation experience, ensuring accessibility for beginners. 3. Balance of Experiential Insight and Self-Reflection: Through insight, loving-kindness, and Ganhwaseon meditations, it enables direct experience of the Three Marks of Existence and dependent origination, fostering deep insight and long-term emotional stability. Reinterpreting Buddhist teachings for contemporary contexts, this program minimizes meditation’s adverse effects and offers an alternative approach that meets modern psychological and spiritual needs through ethical practice and experiential insight.
