Abstract

This study aims to organically integrate the core principles of Josa Seon (祖師禪) and Ganhwa Seon (看話禪), the representative meditative traditions of Korean Seon Buddhism, and to reconstruct them as a five-stage practice system suited to contemporary conditions and technological environments. Josa Seon emphasizes intuitive awakening and embodied mindfulness in daily life, while Ganhwa Seon focuses on the deepening of existential doubt through hwadu (critical phrase) and the deconstruction of ego-identity via Seonmundap (traditional Seon question–answer exchanges; Seon Dialogue, 禪問答). Both traditions pursue intuitive insight prior to language and logic, placing the master–disciple relationship at the center of the practice process. This study interprets the inner structure of these traditions through the integrated sequence of “hwadu–doubt–dialogue–awakening,” and reconstructs the flow of psychological and emotional transformation into five stages: (1) Emotional Grounding – preparing the mind-body condition through emotional stabilization and rhythm regulation; (2) Meta-Cognitive Reflection – observing emotions and thoughts to dissolve ego-identification; (3) Intensive Doubt Practice – deepening immersion through repeated questioning; (4) Cognitive Disruption – inducing perceptual shift through the subversion of language; and (5) Daily Embodiment – sustaining awareness in everyday contexts. The system is designed to unfold non-linearly according to the practitioner’s internal state and can be adjusted in real time through integration with GPT-based language models, emotion analysis, immersion tracking, and feedback reports. It functions as a verbal support tool for teachers within traditional Seon pedagogy, and as a “Digital Seon do-ban (善道伴)”—a virtual companion to support practitioners in the absence of a physical teacher. Furthermore, the proposed system is applicable not only in digital settings but also within traditional Seonbang (Seon practice halls, 禪房) as a structural framework for diagnostic guidance. Ultimately, this study holds both theoretical and practical significance by presenting a model of applied Seon Buddhism that integrates traditional meditative principles with contemporary technologies to promote sustained self-awareness and contemplative immersion.
