Abstract
This paper analyzes Shin Myeong-gyun’s contributions as a children’s literature writer, focusing on his literary achievements. Shin Myeong-gyun, who played a significant role in the development of national culture as a Korean language scholar during the Japanese occupation, also made notable contributions to children’s literature, producing works that stimulated the imagination and adventurous spirit of young readers with his excellent writing style. Particularly, Shin Myeong-gyun emphasized love within families and the adventurous spirit of boys, rather than the nationalistic sentiment emphasized in the original work Cuore, when he serialized “From the Apennines to the Andes” from the first issue of Sin Sonyeon. Through the analysis of his works, Shin Myeong-gyun’s translation and stylistic features can be categorized into three aspects: first, the story of a boy’s setbacks and triumphs in his adventures, second, the enhancement of family narratives, and third, the use of colloquial language that showcases the essence of the Korean language. Although Shin Myeong-gyun published works that not only presented scientific thinking and knowledge but also captured the interest of readers through imagination and expressive power, the limited number of his works remains a regrettable aspect. This is possibly linked to his view that practical knowledge was more important than literary works during the colonial period. Therefore, a deeper analysis of Shin Myeong-gyun’s literary philosophy, his writer’s spirit, and his consciousness of the Korean language is necessary. His various attempts at literature and the Korean language movement should be explored in greater depth.
