근대 서구문명의 기획인 ‘공간의 시간화’를 경험과학적으로 정당화해왔던 역사학은 현대도시에 만연된 ‘시간의 공간화’ 양상 및 이와 결부된 국민적 정체성의 와해라는 새로운 정치적 현실에 직면하여 활로를 찾고 있다. 역사학의 양대 범주인 역사성과 공간성을 이론적으로 점검하고 이들 간의 새로운 관계설정을 모색함으로써 역사학의 학문적, 정치적 정당성이 재구축될 수 있다. 역사성은 특유의 객관주의적 형이상학으로 인해 인간사의 모든 것을 역사의 선형적 궤도 안에 말끔하게 편입시켜 인간을 존재론적으로 포박한다. ‘기대지평’과 피치 못할 괴리를 빚고 있는 ‘경험공간’이 역사학의 개입을 요청한다. 공간 특유의 물질성을 적극 인정하면 역사적 기억을 배반하는 공간의 독자성/타자성에 주목하게 된다. 역사학은 단지 역사의 범주적 조건이 아닌 공간 스스로의 역사성을 연구대상으로 삼고 주체와 구조 간의 해묵은 갈등을 넘어 공간 자체를 정치화할 필요가 있다. 이때 공간은 제도권 정치질서 안에 머물지 않고 오히려 그로부터 배제된 주변부의 경험들을 포괄할 수 있어야한다. 공간이 역사의 잉여 내지는 외부로 새롭게 규정될 때, 다시 말해 공간성이 역사성의 족쇄를 박차고 나올 때 역사성 스스로도 변화의 계기를 얻으며 역사학은 비로소 새로운 정당성을 확보할 수 있다.
Abstract
Disciplinary history has been empirically justifying the so-called temporalization of space, which was an ambitious project of modern Western civilization, and it is now facing the new political wave of the so-called spatialization of time as well as the accompanying collapse of national identity. This paper attempts to reconstruct the academic and political legitimacy of history by theoretically examining its two main categories, historicity and spatiality. The category of historicity on the strength of its own metaphysical objectivism incorporates everything of human affairs neatly in the linear orbit of history. The ‘space of experience,’ which is inevitably at odds with the ‘horizon of expectation,’ however, provokes historical rethinking. Once we positively acknowledge the materiality of space, we turn to the sovereignty/alterity of space that tends to betray historical memory. It is now necessary for disciplinary history to deal with history of space itself, rather than confining space as categorical condition of history. Furthermore, it is necessary to politicize the space as such beyond the conflict between subject and structure. The space in this sense should be able to encompass the experiences of the periphery that are excluded from the political order. Disciplinary history can develop a new justification, only if space is newly defined as surplus or external to history, if spatiality turns off from historicity which consequently gains momentum for change, too.
