“공간적 전환”으로서 역사의 생태학적 조망

역사학은 시간적 차원의 연구로서 이해되어왔다. 공간은 주변적으로 취급된 듯이 보인다. 그러나 역사는 시간 · 공간 · 인간이라는 3요소로 구성된다. 실제로 역사 연구에서 공간은 시간과 함께 필수불가결한 의미를 갖는다. 이 글은 20세기 들어서 역사학에서 공간에 대한 관심이 증대되는 과정을 살펴보면서 그 배경과 의미가 무엇인지 고찰한다. 이 현상이 지리학의 담론으로 등장한 “공간적 전환”과 상관되는 것인지 특별히 주목될 것이다. 이 글에서 주안점으로 삼는 것은 역사학에서 비교적 최근에 대두되는 환경사다. 역사를 생태학적으로 조망하는 환경사는 지금까지 관심을 두지 않았던 자연환경과 인간의 관계를 고찰한다는 점에서 물리적인 공간과 직접 관련되는 역사학 분야다. 이 환경사는 역사에서 공간 인식의 확대 과정의 일환인가? 특히 공간적 전환 담론의 산물인가? 환경사의 공간적 함의가 무엇인지를 파악하는 것이 이 글의 목적이다. 환경사는 역사 연구의 공간적 범위를 최대한으로, 즉 인간세계로부터 자연세계로까지 확장시켰다. 또한 민족과 국가를 단위로 한 근대 역사학의 서술체계를 지구사적 차원으로 넓혔다. 그러면 그것이 패러다임 전환으로서 공간적 전환을 야기하였다고 할 수 있는가? 생태사로서 지구사의 도전은 역사에서 인간의 역할을 상대화하고 인간의 연구로서 역사학의 정체성에 위기를 가져다줄 것인가? 이 글에서는 그러한 극단적인 추정은 차치하고 더욱 분명하게 현실적으로 파악할 수 있는 환경사의 공간적 함의를 공간성의 범위가 얼마큼 크냐보다 그 질적인 의미가 무엇이냐에서 찾아보았다. 바로 환경의 다른 표현인 ‘생태계’라는 단어 자체가 뜻하는 ‘유기체들이 외부세계와 맺는 관계’, 즉 인간이 자연공간과 맺는 관계를 고찰한다는 의미에 환경사의 본질이 들어있다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
Studies of history has been understood as a study of time, as if place and space in the matter are marginal. In fact, history is comprised of three elements: time, space and people. Space and time are two indispensable elements in history. The purpose of this paper is to explore the course of space taking a greater role in the discipline of history and to contemplate its background and meaning. Especially, the focus will set to determine whether this phenomenon is correlated with “The Spatial Turn” that emerged as a discourse in geology. The most emphasized in this paper is environmental history, which recently came to the fore in historical studies. Environmental history which perceives history in an ecological outlook is a field in history that is directly related to physical space in the purview that it examines the relationship between natural environment and people, which was never done before. Is environmental history a part of expansion in spatial awareness in history? Especially, is it a product of spatial turn discourse? It is the purpose of this paper to determine the spatial implications of environmental history. Environmental history expanded the spatial scope of studies of history to the maximum, i.e. from the human world to the natural world. It also expanded the narration of modern historiography, which was restricted in units of country and ethnic groups, to a global history. If so, could it be regarded as triggering spatial turn as a paradigm change? Will our challenge on global history as ecological history relativize the role of human in history and bring identity crisis to it as a study on humanities? This paper puts such extreme assumptions aside and delves into exploring the qualitative meaning, rather than the scope of spatiality, of spatial implications in environmental history that could be more clearly and realistically determined. It can be said that the essence of environmental history lies in ‘the relationship of organisms have with the outer world’, the meaning of the term ‘ecology’, another expression for environment, in other words, the contemplation of relationship between human and natural space.
