Abstract
The Kumok Cave site was excavated eight times between 1995 and 2007, yielding diverse mammalian fossils, along with stone and bone artifacts from Late Pleistocene deposits. Of particular note is the discovery of Macaca mulatta fossils in association with Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis, Panthera tigris, and the cave hyena(Crocuta ultima). These finds provide valuable evidence for reconstructing the paleoenvironment and for defining the northern range limit of the Rhesus macaque monkey during the Late Pleistocene. The stone and bone tools are tentatively attributed to the Middle and Late Paleolithic. However, a reexamination for periodization of the artifacts is required, as the excavation contexts and stratigraphic associations remain insufficiently clear. Nevertheless, the archaeological investigations conducted at the Kumok Cave site make a significant contribution to understanding both the current state of research in North Korean Paleolithic archaeology and the broader debates surrounding it.
