Abstract
This study examines whether the U.S. goal of containing China's growing influence in the global economy is actually being achieved and how the influence of the two countries on the Korean economy is changing in terms of value-added since the U.S. policy of containment against China through the analysis of the world input-output table. The analysis shows that, first, based on the share of global gross value added generated by both countries' final demand, the share of China actually expanded in 2020, the last year of Trump's presidency, while the share of the United States remained almost unchanged. In 2022, the end of President Biden's second year in office, China's share of global value added generated by final demand declined slightly, while the U.S. share expanded slightly. Second, China enjoys more positive spillovers from other countries than the U.S. in value added, and the gap between the two countries is widening. Third, when comparing 2016, the year before Trump took office, to 2020, the last year of his presidency, we find that while the U.S. has become more influential than China in increasing South Korea's value-added, China remains the most influential foreign source of valueadded in South Korea. These results were similar when comparing 2016 to 2022, the second year of the Biden presidency. Fourth, most of the changes in South Korea's value-added growth over the 2016-2020 and 2016-2022 periods were due to changes in global final goods demand. Considering that there is no significant change in China's status in the global economy despite the U.S. checks and that China's contribution to creating value-added in Korea remains high, it is very important to maintain stable trade relations between Korea and China for the stability and growth of the Korean economy.
