Abstract

Storytelling has been used in post-conflict or post-traumatic societies such as Northern Ireland, Cambodia, Germany, Israel, Serbia to bring understanding and trust among groups with extreme difference in position and interest. Although every society might have diverse kinds of trauma or conflicts, storytelling has positive effects on social healing and integration by helping find and restructure new meanings from the past and enabling communities and individuals to form new identities. In that manner, storytelling will be also useful for people in South and North Korea. In South Korea, however, storytelling study is in its beginning stage and practical application examples are very rare. In addition, since reflecting the characteristics of each society is important for successful storytelling, more studies on the social characteristics of both societies are needed. Therefore, this study firstly propose storytelling as a new technique which can be effectively applied for psychological conflict resolution and reconciliation between South and North Koreans. Secondly, it presents the possibility and direction of storytelling in the unification process of North and South Korea.
