본고는 ‘정상화하는 일본’ 현상을 이해하기 위해 일본 내의 ‘좌’와 ‘우’를 막론하여 형성된 국가정체성을 분석한다. 이러한 정체성은 근대 이후를 관통하는 일본이라는 민족(네이션)에 대한 미학적 인식 형태이다. 근대 민족주의의 미학은 국가제도의 기술적 정치와 다양한 이해관계가 각축하는 시민사회의 감성적 대립을 보완하는 민족 공동체라는 하나의 상상력을 제공해준다. 이러한 상상력은 시간에 대한 이해, 정치적 이상에 대한 개인의 접근성, 시간과 의미를 공유하는 공동체를 이해하는 문화적 형식이다. 1960년대 후반 일본의 극우세력과 극좌세력을 각각 대표하는 미시마 유키오와 전학공투회의는 전후 엘리트 보수 뿐 만 아니라 전통 우익, 좌익세력과 자신들을 구별하였다. 그리고 이들은 전후 일본의 민족(네이션)의 문제를 상상하고 실천하는 방식에서 상호간의 선택적인 유사성을 보였다. 이들이 제기하였던 일본이라는 미완의 민족(네이션)에 대한 문제인식은 전후 일본의 우익-좌익 담론에서 미해결된 채로 남아있는 가운데, 아베로 대표되는 일본 보수 엘리트들이 대중적 지지를 동원할 수 있는 미학적 기제가 되었다.
Abstract
Examining the phenomena called ‘Normalizing Japan’, this article aims to analyze how national identity is diffused in Japan regardless of the political affiliation. This identity is a means with which an aesthetic form for perceiving the Japanese Nation penetrates the modern and post-modern era of Japan. The aesthetics of modern nationalism in Japan provides Japanese nation with an imagination of the nation-state. This imagination is a cultural form through which individuals comprehend the concept of time, access to the political ideal, and the sense of simultaneity in a single community. Michima Yukio and The Zenkyōtō students in the late 1960s’ Japan represented the radicalized political stances which were differentiated from the conventional right-left politics. They have selective affinities with each other in how they imagine and practice the post-war Japanese nation. The problem remains unsolved among the right-left discourses in the Japanese political scene today. The problem-solving process still serves as an aesthetic mechanism that the Japanese conservatives represented by Abe Shinzo mobilizes the popular support.
