나치 정치에 있어서 음악의 중요성은 독일 민족주의의 핵심 요소로서의 음악의 존재, 감성을 움직이는 대중 민주주의에서의 미학적 기능, 히틀러 세계관의 주요 요소, 나치 외교의 수단이라는 점 등에 있다. 결국 바흐, 헨델, 모차르트, 베토벤, 바그너, 브루크너 등의 음악은 독일 문화 전통과의 지속성을 제공하고, 독일 문화의 우수성을 보여주고, 패전 후의 무너진 자존심을 회복시키며, 나치 하에 국민을 결속시키는 데 활용되었다. 또한 모차르트와 브루크너의 음악은 위장 평화의 수단, 병합 후의 선무 외교의 역할을 하였다. 나치는 또한 이와 같은 ‘좋은 음악’들과 구분되는 ‘나쁜 음악’들을 규정하여 배제의 정치를 실천하였다. 유태인 작곡가들의 음악과 현대음악은 나치의 세계에서 사라져야 할 음악이었다. 본 연구 중 바그너의 사례에서 얻은 시사점은 예술가가 예술 이외의 형태로 정치에 참여할수록 정치에 의해 이용당할 가능성이 커지며, 예술의 자율성이 훼손될 수 있다는 것이다.
Abstract
Music was important in Nazi politics in four respects. First, music constituted an essential part of cultural nationalism of Nazi politics. Second, music was used to mobilize the people of mass democracy. Third, considerable part of Hitler’s Weltanschauung originated from Wagner. Fourth, music also played roles in Nazi diplomacy. Nazi utilized the works of Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner and Bruckner for those purposes. Nazi also dichotomized music between ‘good music’ and ‘bad music’ and banished the works of Jewish composers and the modern or avant guard musicians as ‘bad music.’ One of the most important implications of this study is the autonomy of music as art. Wagner’s case shows that the autonomy of music from politics is weakened by musicians’ political activities in non-musical ways.
