Abstract
While firms in uncertain business environments seek for various strategic alternatives in order to survive and develop, manufacturing flexibility receives attention as an alternative to manage uncertainty in business environments from the perspective of operations management. The main purpose of this study is to explore relationships among manufacturing flexibility, technological innovation, and firm performance by empirically analyzing manufacturing firms in Daegu-Gyeongbuk, Korea. In the research model, technological innovation is subdivided into product and process innovations and firm performance, a second order factor, is formed by two first order factors such as market and manufacturing performances which are directly related to manufacturing flexibility. Results from the empirical analysis show that manufacturing flexibility directly influences firm performance and technological innovation such as product and process innovations mediates the relation between manufacturing flexibility and firm performance. In addition, product and process innovations positively affect firm performance. In conclusion, this study shows there is a need for manufacturing flexibility in order to promptly respond to changes in business environments effectively and efficiently and manufacturing flexibility can be a critical source for improving technology innovation and firm performance.
