5G 이동통신과 미디어 테크놀로지의 물질성: 인프라로서의 미디어 네트워크를 향한 탐색적 연구

초록

이 논문은 사회과학과 미디어 연구의 측면에서 5G 담론의 의미를 살피고, 네트워크 환경에서의 커뮤니케이션과 미디어 테크놀로지는 경제 성장을 위한 기술적 엔진이 아니라 우리 삶의 물질적 인프라로 보아야 함을 이론적으로 탐색한다. 현재 한국에서의 5G와 관련된 담론에는 혁신의 논의가 과장되었고 물질성의 논의는 감추어져 있다. 그렇기 때문에 이 논문은 앞으로 미디어 연구가 현재 진행 중인 기술발전을 사회의 인프라로 보고 그 사회적 의미를 밝히는 데 적극 개입할 수 있도록 연구 범위를 확장해야 할 것을 주장한다. 이 논문은 디지털 네트워크와 5G 기술을 효율성과 경제적 가치 면에서만 접근할 것이 아니라 미래의 기술적인 지형의 존재 조건이 될 미디어 인프라로 인식해야 함을 밝힌다.

Abstract

This paper explores the meaning of 5G discourse in the aspect of social science and media studies and suggests that communication and media technology in network environment should be regarded not as a technical engine for economic growth but as a material infrastructure of our life. Discussions on innovation in the 5G discourse are exaggerated and the conceptual importance of materiality is invisibly hidden. Thus, it is argued that media studies should be actively intervened to view the social development of technology as a social infrastructure. As digital networks and 5G technology would transform our lives in the near future, we need to recognize them as a material condition for technological topography, rather than just a means of access to efficiency and economic value.
