Abstract

As collective identities, including gender, have gained political significance in our society, the discussion around establishing the relationship between individual unique identities and groups has become increasingly important. Traditional liberal perspectives have argued that individual identities should not be infringed upon by the state or political society, yet they have overlooked the significance of social and collective pressures on individual identities and the political responses these provoke. Feminism has highlighted the political significance of identity, particularly focusing on gender identity, but has shown relatively less interest in the issue of collective oppression of individual identities. Hannah Arendt's concept of the “conscious pariah” as a mode of agency related to identity offers the potential for identity politics to avoid leading to the oppression of individual identities, instead continually providing a political topos where social oppression and resistance intersect. “Conscious pariahs” are political agents who, by resisting societal oppression of their collective identity, seek recognition while not essentializing their group identity, and by critically reflecting on their group's traditions and history, they can form and acquire new individual identities. This paper aims to identify the potential for renewing identity politics within the tension between individual and collective identities in Arendt's political thought, and to concretely present this through the mode of action of the conscious pariah. Additionally, it proposes narrative action models and high social responsiveness as conditions for the success of Arendt's identity politics. If identity politics can re-enable a politics of universal liberation against social oppression, it can continue to demonstrate its relevance in contemporary politics.
