Abstract

This study analyzes the persistence and potential transformation of traditional regional voting behavior in South Korea, with particular focus on the Yeongnam region, during the 21st presidential election held early in June 2025. The election was conducted under extraordinary political circumstances following former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s attempt to declare martial law and his subsequent impeachment. These conditions raised the possibility of significant shifts in longstanding regional political alignments. To assess these dynamics, the study employed original survey questions—covering regional vote shares, candidate favorability, perceptions of responsibility for the political crisis, and future party support intentions —using binary logistic, ordinal logistic, and OLS regression models. The results confirm strong regionalism in Gwangju/Jeolla, and—at the macro level—also in Daegu/Gyeongbuk. However, micro-level analysis reveals signs of attenuation even within the TK region, indicating the potential weakening of entrenched regional loyalties. In the PK region (Busan/Ulsan/Gyeongnam), the gap between Democratic Party and People Power Party support has narrowed significantly, suggesting a clearer pattern of spatial differentiation and regional softening. A generational breakdown shows stronger support for the Democratic Party among younger voters in Yeongnam, and analysis of future party support intentions reveals a narrower partisan gap than the actual election results, implying possible structural realignment. This study thus contributes to understanding not only short-term electoral outcomes, but also the long-term prospects for the reconfiguration of regionalism in South Korean politics through original survey design and multi-level empirical analysis.
