환율의 외연(extensive margin) 및 심도(intensive margin) 효과 - 외국인 국내 입국자수 및 지출액 자료를 이용한 분석

초록

본고는 환율변동이 외국인 관광객의 국내관광 지출 규모에 미치는 영향을 외국인 입국자수에 미치는 외연(extensive margin) 효과와 입국 관광객 1인당 지출액에 미치는 심도(intensive margin) 효과로 구분하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 국가별로 차이는 있으나 대체로 환율은 외연 보다는 심도에 미치는 효과가 더 크고 분명한 것으로 확인되었다. 반면 항공료 가격과 관련되어 있을 것으로 예상되는 유가의 경우는 통계적으로 유의한 결과를 확인하기 어려웠다. 이는 우리나라의 원화 가치가 평가절하 되었을 경우 상대적으로 외국인의 국내 입국 관광객 수를 확대하는 효과 보다는 국내에 입국한 외국인들의 평균적인 지출 규모를 늘리는 효과가 더 크고 뚜렷하다는 점을 시사하는 것이라고 볼 수 있다.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the effect of exchange rate on the scale of foreign travelers’ expenditure who are visiting South Korea during 2007-2016. The results of empirical analysis by separating the exchange rate effect on the number of foreign visitors (extensive margin) and their average spending (intensive margin) show that the exchange rate have a greater and more robust effect on the intensive margin than extensive margin, although the results vary among countries. However, for the oil price that is used as a proxy of air fares, it is difficult to find statistically significant results on the extensive and intensive margins. These results suggest that the Korean Won's depreciation will increase the average spending of foreign visitors, rather than the number of foreign visitors.
