Abstract

This paper examines the effects of idiosyncratic bank shocks on investment at the firm-level and aggregate level by applying the methodology proposed by Amiti and Weinstein (2018) to matched bank-firm loan data, which covers all loans provided by banks to listed firms in Korea. Our results at the firm-level indicate that negative bank shocks have a detrimental impact on the investments of firms that rely heavily on bank loans for investment or lack access to alternative financing tools. However, adverse bank shocks do not affect large firms or those with access to alternative financing sources. Additionally, our findings at the aggregate level suggest that bank shocks are a significant driving force behind economic fluctuations in Korea over the business cycle.
