Abstract

This paper is a study on the Water Libation Ceremony(Yay Zat Cha) which is being done at the end of almost all Buddhist conventions in Myanmar. This ceremony is a ritual to share the acquired virtues and merits, which has to do with the narrative of Earth Goddess Wathondhara, which was called to prove the merit of the Gautama Buddha's previous life when Buddha attained enlightenment. For Buddhists in Myanmar, the most important act of faith is the pursuit of merit. This is the most emphasized virtue of all Buddhist in Myanmar. These characteristics are the belief that their basic perception of life, that is, the present life is the result of what they have created in the past, and that what I am doing now will serve as the determining factor for my next lifetime. They believe that accruing merit in the present life is important for a better future, and believe that we should create more merit for this. Therefore, in order to religiously support such an act of faith, a Water Libation Ceremony with a certain form was established, which invoke Wattondara to remember and prove all my acts of merit. This ceremony acts as a religious device to share the virtues and merits that he has acquired with all beings who have relationships with him from past to present life, including parents and brothers. Through this Water Libation Ceremony, Myanmar people not only reveals the religious act of accumulation of merit, but also unifies its own community and cultural homogeneity through the form of 'sharing of virtues and merits'.
