Abstract

This study intends to discover an exemplary model of professional counselor’s attitude who tries to help their clients suffering from maladaptive psychological discomfort in a complex modern society by examining the bodhisattva practice and wisdom measures of Yuma. In Buddhist perspective, Yuma’s illustrative characteristics presents ideal image of Buddhist that fulfills bodhisattva practices with endless endeavors and extraordinary wisdom in order to benefit sattva. The modern bodhisattva practice of professional counselors is to vow to psychological struggles of clients and conduct effective counseling through exploiting studies on diversified theories and methodologies. Yuma showed the infinite generosity of the parents that saying ‘if a child hurts, the parents also hurt’. His illness was a means to deliver the impermanent lessons to his visitors and a medium for his criticism on the way of life that only considers one’s own liberation. Through his generosity and wisdom, Yuma set a perfect example for professional counselors and their attitude. While both Yuma’s bodhisattva practice and the professional counselors’ support are selfless acts, the latter has restrictions in terms of work ethics and social roles as being a professional in the modern society. Nevertheless, professional counselors should constantly attempt to be in pursuit of self-contemplation, philanthropy to achieve the practice of mutual benefit by modeling Yuma’s bodhisattva practice. The purpose of this study is to seek a standard of professional counselors’ attitude through exploring Yuma’s bodhisattva practice for qualitative enhancement of counseling and to stimulate profound researches on instructions of the counselors’ work ethics in accordance with Korean culture and programs for professional counselors which will strengthen their competence to become more mature one in the future.
