Abstract

This paper defines the concept of cakra in Indian tradition and considers how the most commonly known cakra system of 6, or 6+1 is established today based on the achievements of Western scholars. We may say that cakra which is similar to maṇḍala and yantra, is a circle or geometric pattern of gods, or mantras representing gods, although it is difficult to define it accurately. Among them, maṇḍala refers to a larger scale and yantra and cakra is a part of it. In particular, yantra is made on durable things that can be used as a kind of talisman, and cakra is especially meant to be a combination of circular gods. In this regard, maṇḍala is a large circle-shaped structure used in rites, and cakra is a part of it. When this external ritual form is internalized into the body, we may say that maṇḍala is the body, and cakra is the key point in it. It seems that the cakra system in a traditional Indian hathayogic body has been formed as a device for a meditation, when the external rite form of Tantra was internalized into the body. This internalization process was ideological and symbolic in accordance with the teachings of each faith in Tantra, so there were various cakra systems depending on the difference of each doctrine of various faiths in tantra. Among them, the 6 or 6+1 cakra system became common in India, which was introduced to the West in the late 19th century. Today, the Western cakra system combines the six or six plus one systems of Indian tradition with Western occultism, making it quite different from the Indian traditional cakra system. Although there had been various cakra systems in India, 6, or 6+1 cakra system is recognized as the only one in the West.
