현대의 차크라 관념 형성에 큰 영향을 준 세 사람과 그들의 세 저작이 있다. 그중 두 사람 간에 차크라론을 둘러싸고 일종의 쟁점들이 부각되어 나타났다. 그 일은 우드로프(Woodroffe)가 The Serpent Power에서 리드비터(Leadbeater)의 차크라론을 비판하는 데서 시작되었다. 그 쟁점들은 양적인 면에서 적지 않고, 질적인 면에서 얕지 않다. 본고는 해당 쟁점들을 보다 깊이 있게 이해하고 연구하기 위한 출발점이다. 이를 위해, 먼저 그 쟁점들과 관련된 리드비터와 우드로프의 개인사 그리고 그들의 저작인 The Chakras와 The Serpent Power에 대해 살펴보았다. 그런 다음 양자 간에 보이는 쟁점들의 핵심 내용을 추려서 10가지로 정리했다. 연구 결과, 리드비터는 신지학 사상에 근거를 두고, 자신이 계발한 초자연적 투시력을 사용하여 차크라들을 관찰한 내용을 기록했다. 한편 우드로프는 전통적인 인도 수행론, 특히 탄트라 사상을 토대로 문헌학적인 방법을 활용하여 차크라들에 대해 기술했다. 따라서 양자 간에 차이가 있을 수밖에 없다. 그런데 이 쟁점들의 발생 배경에는 당시의 많은 오컬트(occult) 유형의 문헌들에서 그랬듯이, 리드비터가 자신의 주장을 마치 인도의 관념인 것처럼 간주했다는 사실에 있다. 우드로프는 인도의 문헌들에 근거하여 이 점들을 구체적으로 비판했다. 그 비판점들은 쟁점들이라 할 수 있는데, 그것들은 다음과 같이 10가지로 정리할 수 있다. ①비장 차크라, ②사하스라라(sahasrāra)의 연꽃잎의 개수, ③일곱 센터 외 3개의 하위 센터, ④수행에서 도달점이 갖는 의미, ⑤쿤달리니(kuṇḍalinī)의 활용과 남근 마법, ⑥요가의 겹(kośa)과 신지학의 체(body), ⑦쿤달리니의 정체와 역할, ⑧차크라의 개수, ⑨비장 차크라와 배꼽 차크라의 위치, ⑩차크라의 모양.
Abstract
There are three people and three works that have had a major impact on the formation of ideas of modern chakra. Between them, a kind of issues emerged over chakra theory, They began with Woodroffe's criticism of Leadbeater's chakra theory in The Serpent Power. The issues are not small in quantity, nor shallow in quality. This paper is a starting point for a deeper understanding and study of these issues. This paper is a starting point for a deeper understanding and study of these issues. For this, first, we examine the personal histories of Leadbeater and Woodroffe which related to the issues and search their books, The Chakras and The Serpent Power. Then, we pick up the key points of contention between the them into a list of ten. According to the results of research, Leadbeater's work is grounded in theosophical ideas, and he recorded his observations of chakras using the supernatural clairvoyance he had developed. Describing chakras, on the other hand, Woodroffe is based on traditional Indian spiritual practices, specifically Tantric thought and used a philological method. Hence there are bounded to be the differences between them. However, the background of the controversial issues lies in the fact that Leadbeater regarded his opinions as an Indian ideas, as in many occult-type literature at that time. Woodroffe specifically criticized these points based on Indian texts. And the ten points of contention are as below; ①the spleen chakra, ②the number of lotus petals in the sahasrāra, ③the seven centers and three sub-centers, ④the meaning of attainments in practice, ⑤the use of kuṇḍalinī and phallic magic, ⑥the kośa in Yoga and the body in Theosophy, ⑦the identity and role of the kundalini, ⑧the number of chakras, ⑨the location of the spleen and navel chakras, and ⑩the shape of chakras.
