Abstract

Purpose The objective of this study is to examine the effects of sports psychological skills on competition anxiety, internal motivation, and perceived performance in taekwondo power breaking athletes. Method The study subjects were 234 male and female power breaking athletes aged 19 years or older. Among the collected data, 15 surveys with duplicate or missing responses were excluded, and the remaining 219 surveys were analyzed using SPSS statistical software to perform frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, reliability testing, and multiple regression analysis. Results Confidence, as a psychological skill in sports, influenced cognitive state anxiety, while goal setting and anxiety control affected somatic state anxiety. Confidence and concentration impacted state confidence; team cohesion influenced intrinsic motivation factors such as enjoyment and effort; imagery and willpower affected perceived competence; concentration and willpower contributed to perceived performance ability; concentration influenced self-belief; and team cohesion and imagery affected self-effort. Conclusion Sports psychological skills were found to affect competition anxiety, internal motivation, and perceived performance. With that, it appeared that trained power breaking athletes had excellent anxiety control ability, confidence, and focus. They enjoyed working with a team and had a firm belief in their skills and competence, which was based on their hard work. In particular, the athletes seemed to have excellent self-management skills and their own training methods. It is expected that these finding may provide useful insight for power breaking athletes.
