Abstract
Purpose This study aims to identify problems in the current Taekwondo Poomsae competition rules and propose improvements. It seeks to enhance fairness and objectivity and provide foundational data for the development of Taekwondo Poomsae in Korea. Method Participants included 4 award-winning coaches with over 10 years of experience, 2 national-level recognized poomsae athletes, 2 freestyle poomsae athletes, and 2 referees with over 7 years of experience. Inductive category analysis was conducted through expert meetings involving professors and national team coaches. Results Firstly, the identified problems in the competition rules include the structural issues of the scoring criteria for Recognized Poomsae, the structural issues of the scoring criteria for Freestyle Poomsae, limitations of the judging system, and the subjective interpretation of the rules. Secondly, the proposed solutions include the restructuring of the evaluation system for Recognized Poomsae, the restructuring of the evaluation system for Freestyle Poomsae, improvement and supplementation of the judging system, and the clarification and consistency of rule interpretation. Lastly, the expected outcomes are the realization of a fairer sport and the further development of Taekwondo Poomsae. Conclusion Taekwondo Poomsae rules face ongoing issues due to structural flaws, judging system limitations, and subjective interpretation. Proposed reforms include refined scoring criteria, role-based judging, blind evaluations, and rulebook development. These changes are expected to enhance fairness, improve athlete performance, and professionalize the judging system, while also making Poomsae more accessible and engaging for audiences. In the long term, such reforms may strengthen its global standing and support discussions on Olympic inclusion.
