Abstract

Model novels in 1920s and 1930s are deeply related to how to comprehend the power of media and their properties when the competition became sharp among newspapers and magazines. Model Novels used famous people as their models in accordance with the commercial characteristics of media and they intentionally clang to disclose sensational subjects like shameful things. Especially, they multiplied the topicality by intentionally inducing the debate about the modeling. Model novels also intentionally adds transformations of their models to intensify the exquisiteness of special reading skill - the reading skill of audience to contrast the novel and the real people who became the models, or the real events. In other words, they make the special reading skill more complex and difficult, which resembles puzzle solving by contrasting the novel stories and the real people's deeds throughout the reading process of audience. Naturally, audience feel the enjoyment and exquisiteness of solving the hidden stories more deeply, which then created the debating topicality among ordinary people. Model novels also multiplied their popularity and charms by creating attractive images of wicked women. They described the wicked women's outlooks not only as selfish, rakish and devoid of social consciousness but also as good-looking, artistically talented, intelligent, showing their fine senses, passionate attitudes and most of all, their new generational charms, like sex appeals and open-mindedness. Therefore, the modern women in model novels appear as attractive images of wicked women, and those new charms gave birth to a confusion among ordinary people. Sometimes, the wicked women's evil deeds were fatal enough to destroy the lives of others, but the fatality itself made the wicked women's charms more captivating.
