Abstract
The ‘New Women’ in Kim Dong-In's novels lost theirs chastity easily due to their ignorance of and weak attitude towards chastity. On the other hand, those in Yeom Sang-Sub's novels denied the virtue of chastity or had a false concept of chastity, Which was due to their vanity. Looking down upon women, Kim Dong-In distorted the idea on chastity of the ‘new women’ criticizing directly. Taking a neutral attitude, Yeom Sang-Sub took an indirect way criticizing it. The ‘new women’ of Kim Meong-Sun's novels put love into action and resisted the norm of the day actively by deserting their family or divorcing. Those in Rha Hye-Suk'novels tried to enlightenen the general public by exemplary conduct or contract marriage. While Kim Meong-sun was in pursuit of unrealistic and idealistic love, Rha Hye-Suk respected tangible profit and pursued planned love, showing that the new idea on chasity of the ‘new women’ was of rather moral nature.
