Abstract

This study analyzes safety issues and corresponding countermeasures that emerged during the transition from Driver Train Operation (DTO) to a fully Unattended Train Operation (UTO) system. Based on the international standard IEC 62267, the study examined safety requirements and found that Operator A lacked several critical safety functions, including platform emergency stop switches, door safety mechanisms, unauthorized access detection on the guideway, and obstacle monitoring systems. In addition, many instances were identified where self-rescue or rescue operations using a following train were not feasible in the event of a failure. Based on this analysis, the study proposes technical enhancements and regulatory improvements to strengthen safety and offers a practical foundation for the future expansion of driverless operation across various transportation systems, including tram-train networks.
