1999년 12월 홍콩과 함께 중국에 반환된 마카오는 인종이나 언어, 의식주 등 문화 다방면에 걸쳐 중국 속의 ‘작은 포르투갈’이라는 특수한 정체성을 지니고 있다. 이 ‘작은 포르투갈’은 중국으로부터 분리된 채 존재하는 것이 아니라 중국과 융화된 복합적인 모습으로 존재한다. 이는 포르투갈과 중국 간의 오랜 동거(同居)로 인해 생겨난 현상인데, 16세기부터 시작된 포르투갈인과 중국인의 동거는 지금까지도 이어지면서 마카오에 매캐니즈(Macanese)라는 독특한 문화를 탄생시켰다. 이 논문에서는 양국의 문화 접촉과 수용, 그 과정에서 탄생한 종교, 인종, 언어 등 각 방면에서 포착되는 문화 혼합 현상에 대해 논하고, 더 나아가 지금도 마카오 땅에서 살고 있는 중국과 포르투갈 혼혈인들의 디아스포라를 연구해본다
Abstract
Macau, which was returned to China along with Hong Kong in December 1999, has a special identity as 'Little Portugal' in China in many aspects of culture, such as race, language, buildings and food. This ‘Little Portugal’ does not exist independently and separated from China, but is fused with China and revealed in a complex way. This is a phenomenon caused by long-term cohabitation between Portugal and China. The cohabitation between Portuguese and Chinese, which began in the 16th century, has continued to this day, creating a unique culture called Macanese in Macau. In this thesis, I’ll discuss cultural contact and acceptance between the two countries, the phenomenon of cultural mixing captured in various aspects such as religion, race, and language born in the process, and furthermore, the diaspora of mixed-race people born between China and Portugal that still exists in Macau.
