바울의 편지는 현대 문헌이 아니다. 현대의 논리와 구성 방식과는 다른, 고대의 형식을 따라 기록된, 바울 자신의 문체로 쓰인 서신이다. 따라서 어구와 문장을 엮어가는 바울 자신의 글쓰기 방식을 이해하게 될 때, 그 글을 통해 알리고자 하는 바울의 의도를 좀더 정확하게 파악할 수 있을 것이다. 칭의 본문으로 잘 알려진 롬 3:10-31은 바울의 역교차 구성법에 의해 쓰여졌다. 즉, 칭의 이슈에 대한 바울식의 반복적 강조가 나타나는 이 본문은 A(19-20절)-B(21-22)-X(23-26절)-B'(27-30절)-A'(31절)이라는 역교차식 문학적 형식을 가진다. 다시 말해, 19-20절과31절, 21-22절과 27-30절이 서로 연계짝을 이루며 전개됐고, 그 중심에 23-26절이 있다. 본문의 구성이 역교차로 되어 있고, 현대신 논리 배열이 아니라는 점은 주요 주제들의 전개가 순차적이거나, 논리적 순으로 나타나지 않고 있다는 점에서 뒷받침된다. 예컨대, 율법과 죄에 대한 지식(19, 20b, 23, 31절); 율법의 행위의 부적절성(20a,27a,28b절); 하나님의 의의 나타남(21a, 21b절); 칭의에 대한 하나님의 사역, 그리스도의 구속(24,25a절); 죄의 용서(25c, 26a절);의 또는 칭의의 드러내심(25b, 26b, 26d절); 칭의와 관련된 예수에 대한 믿음(22a, 27b, 28a절); 칭의에 차별이 없음(22b, 29-30절)들이다. 본문을 어구별 결합성(cohesion)을 따라 분류할 때, 19-20, 21-22, 23-26, 27-30, 31절 이렇게 다섯 부분으로 나눌 수 있다. 그리고 이들간의 역교차적 관계가 성립되고 있음을 파악하게 된다. 이 논문은 본문의 역교차 구조를 정밀하게 파악하고 이를 해석해 낸 후, 로마서 연구와 관련된 대표적인 및 학자들(Thomas Schreiner, James Dunn; Robert Jewett, Douglas Campbell; Charles Talbert)의 본문 구분과 구조 해석에 대해 비평적 안목에서 논하고 평가한다. 그러면서 이런 연구와 그 결과가 본문의 논쟁적 이슈들에 대해 어떤 빛을 줄 수 있는지 논하고자 했다.
