고대 동서양의 군 주둔지와 제철 지역의 병참선 연구 - 로마와 삼국시대를 중심으로 -

철제 무구는 중요한 군수품이다. 철은 군사력의 핵심이기 때문에 철을 사용할 줄 아는 것은 문명을 발달시켜 제국을 형성하는데 필요한 요소이다. 로마는 북쪽에는 라인 강과 다뉴브 강을 경계선으로, 동쪽에는 유프라테스 강을 경계선으로 군사적 거점 역할을 하는 주둔지를 건설하였다. 고구려, 백제, 신라 역시 임진강과 예성강, 한강, 금호강과 낙동강 등 강을 중요시하였다. 이러한 성곽 배치도의 특징을 볼 때 고대 국가에서 강은 지배 영토의 경계선이자 팽창정책과 방어정책의 기준으로 볼 수 있다. 고대 동서양의 제철 지역에서 군 주둔지로의 병참선을 파악할 때 공통점은 해로가 중요한 역할을 했다는 것이다. 제철 지역이 강과 하천을 끼고 있거나 그 인근에 있다는 것은 제철 지역과 철제 무구의 주요 생산지이자 소비지인 주둔지나 성곽까지의 병참선을 고려하였다는 것이다. 제철 지역, 강과 하천, 주둔지나 성곽으로 이어지는 병참선은 철제 무구의 수급과 관련하여 중요하였다. “군대의 성공은 군인들의 수와 용맹뿐만 아니라 철제 무구에도 달려있다.”는 베게티우스의 주장에서 알 수 있듯이, 로마, 고구려, 백제, 신라는 군사적 거점을 설정할 때 가능한 한 빠른 시간에, 가능한 한 많은 군수품, 특히 철제 무구를 보급하는 것이 전투의 승패에 영향을 준다는 기본 원칙을 이행하고 있었던 것 같다. 이들 국가들이 그 원칙을 이행하는 수단, 즉 병참선의 핵심으로 삼은 것은 강과 하천이었다.
Abstract
This paper seeks to identify factors that are important when the military sets up its garrison. The northern part of Roman Empire was bounded by the Rhine and Danube rivers, and on the east, it was the boundary of the Euphrates, which served as a military base. Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla all have castles in the Imjin and Yeesong rivers, and they have a common point of making them the bridgehead of the southern region, the base of the advance to the north, and the defense line. Thus, in ancient countries, rivers can be seen as the boundary of dominant territory and the standard of expansion and defense policy. The common point is that the harbors play an important role in determining the supply lines from the ancient East and West to the military bases. The sea is beneficial in terms of cost and time for transporting iron ore to an army station or a castle that serves as a base. Therefore, it can be seen that Rome and the Three Kingdoms emphasized the river considering the defense line and the supply line when setting up the army station.
