Abstract
This study examines the transition and significance of iron weapons excavated from the Mahan and Baekje regions. The chronological and spatial scope of the research extends from the mid-2nd century when iron weapons first appeared in the Mahan-Baekje region until the 5th century when the region was incorporated into Baekje territory. The typological transition of iron weapons shows six phases across four major periods. In Phase I-1 (mid-2nd century), thin-necked iron swords and double-collared spears appeared, while Phase I-2 (late 2nd century) was dominated by Ba1-type spears. In Phase II (3rd century), iron swords disappeared and ring-pommel swords emerged. Phase III-1 (early 4th century) saw the appearance of wooden-handled swords and willow leaf-based spears. In Phase III-2 (late 4th century), flat and double-ringed pommel swords and willow leaf-based spears became predominant. Phase IV (5th century) was characterized by the emergence of numerous prestigious weapons. Three major patterns were identified in these transitions. First, changes in the weapon system were observed in Phase II. Second, the Baekje-style spears appeared sequentially throughout Phases III-IV, spreading from the Gokgyocheon River basin to the Miho River and middle Geum River basins, reflecting Baekje's territorial expansion. Third, the emergence of wooden-handled swords in Phase III, showing mutually exclusive burial patterns with spears, suggests the differentiation of military units during Baekje's Hanseong period. These transitions in iron weapons are closely related to Baekje's development from a small Mahan state into a powerful ancient kingdom. The reorganization of military organizations and weapon systems during King Goi's centralization brought qualitative changes to Baekje's military power, enabling the integration of surrounding small states.
