Abstract
In Mark 4:35-41 Jesus’ act of rebuking the sea to calm it is reminiscent of the Exodus event in the Old Testament, where God is described as rebuking the sea to bring it under control (Psa 104:7; 106:9). This parallel leads us to regard Jesus’ ministry as a new Exodus. This new Exodus of Jesus is presented as spiritual Exodus. Jesus’ calming the sea is portrayed as a victory over evil spirits, as indicated by the use of the verbs ‘rebuke’ and ‘muzzle,’ which are also employed elsewhere in Mark to describe Jesus’ exorcism (Mark 1:25). In Mesopotamian and Canaanite myths, the sea was viewed as the god Tiamat or Yammu. In Jewish literature, the wind was regarded as being under the control of spiritual beings (Jubilees 2:2). Especially in the Testament of Solomon (16:1-3), the ruler of the evil spirits is described as one who transforms himself into waves to sink ships. In the Old Testament, the sea symbolizes the force of chaos (Psa 89:8-11; 107:23-30). Such information guides readers to understand Jesus’ calming the sea as his victory over the ruler of evil spirits. Further, Mark 4:35-41 presents Jesus’ new Exodus as being greater than the old Exodus by indicating Jesus’ divinity. According to the Old Testament, God calms the sea and the wind (Psa 65:5-7; 89:8-9; 107:29). So, Jesus, who calms them, is indicated to be divine. In Psalm 89:25, 27, however, a royal figure called the Son of God receives authority from God over the sea. Accordingly, in this incident, Jesus could have been portrayed as the Son of God. Though this miracle story is not attested in multiple independent sources, it contains several clues of historicity. Accordingly it can be considered to have been based on the memory of the historical Jesus.
