Abstract

This paper is to study literary functions and theological meanings of the sea (θάλασσα) in the Gospel of Mark and to suggest a translation of “the Sea of Galilee” instead of “the Lake of Galilee” of Mark 7:31 in New Korean Revised Version (NKR). In the Gospel of Mark, the Greek θάλασσα appears 19 times: it is used to indicate local place 17 times (1:16 [two times]; 2:13; 3:7; 4:1 [three times], 39, 41; 5:1, 13 [two times], 21; 6:47, 48, 49; 7:31) and to deliver a warning message and an instruction (9:42; 11:23). The sea is an important place in Jesus’ Galilean ministry. Jesus gave instructions and performed miraculous works beside and on the sea. The sea, however, is not simply a physical place or background for describing Jesus’ ministry, but serves as a literary framework to develop a narrative. In particular, Mark 4:35-8:21 shows a cyclic pattern, presenting two cycles (4:35-6:44; 6:45-8:10), in which the sea (4:35-41; 6:45-52) and the desert (6:31-44; 8:1-10) are located in the beginning and the end in each cycle. In addition, the sea has theological significances of chaos, threat, judgement, and destruction in cosmological and eschatological dimensions. The sea is a threat 69 against God’s people as a chaotic force (e.g., two sea miracles: 4:35-41; 6:45-52) and a place of judgement to destroy the unclean spirits and the unfruitful Temple (e.g., 5:1-20; 11:12-25). In light of Mark’s consistent usage of θάλασσα and its theological significance, it is proper to translate τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας into“ the Sea of Galilee” in Mark 7:31, which was rendered into “the Lake of Galilee” in NKR.
