Abstract

This paper looked at the impact of the abolition of China's civil service examination system on modern education and what studied it left on modern education. The abolition of China's civil service examination system is an important event to advance modern education. The abolition of the civil service examination has changed the traditional education system and changed the contents and methods of learning. Existing traditional education has not been completely abolished from modern education, but has been replaced by new learning. Also, the subject, content, and location of education have changed. They include gender equality education in male-centered education, education centered on theology from scriptures-centered education, and a shift from shuyuan(書院) to xuetang(學堂). The introduction of the new learning has also boosted the study abroad. However, after the abolition of this civil service examination system, the problems of selection method, establishment of privileged class, fall of traditional studies, problems of Western learning and Western education, and the question of tradition and modernity still remain.
