‘쾌’의 관점에서 본 『소피의 일기』와 질병 서사

『소피의 일기』는 폐결핵에 걸려 요양 생활을 하던 소피라는 젊은 여성이 ‘링지스’라는 잘생긴 남성한테 매료되어 느끼는 성적 충동과 괴로움을 일기 형식으로 기록한 중편 소설이다. 본고에서는 라캉의 ‘욕망’, ‘쾌’, ‘주이상스’ 개념을 통해 소피의 신경증의 실체를 파악하고 이를 통해 1920년대 스물네 살 딩링이 추구했던 ‘진짜 욕망’에 대해서 알아보고자 한다. 라캉의 주이상스는, 사전적으로는 성적 대상에서 나오는 쾌락을 의미하기도 하지만 쾌락과는 본질적으로 구별되며 그것을 초월하는 개념이다.『소피의 일기』는 욕망과 괴로움에 대한 기록이라 볼 수 있는데, 아이러니하게도 ‘욕망의 지연’이라는 불쾌를 통해 소피는 오히려 어떤 의미에서의 ‘쾌’를 획득한다. 폐결핵은 그녀가 상징계의 엄격한 법으로 가득한 현실에서 탈피하여 자신만의 시간과 공간을 누리고, 인간관계 속에서 특별한 관심을 얻고 지위를 누리기 위한 하나의 ‘페르소나’에 가깝다. 폐결핵이라는 질병으로 인한 ‘불쾌’보다 그로 인해서 얻는 관심과 사랑이 궁극적으로는 관계를 향유하는 방식으로서의 ‘쾌’가 되기 때문이다. 또한 『소피의 일기』는 표면적으로는 링지스라는 남자를 욕망하는 것처럼 보이지만, 그녀의 진짜 욕망은 남자가 아닌 성적 쾌락 너머의 ‘죽음 충동’을 향해 있다. ‘링지스’는 상징계에서 실재계로 나아가고자 하는 반역의 힘이자 전복의 욕망으로 주이상스에 해당된다. 즉 상징계에서 거세된 욕망은, 은유와 치환의 이미지로 기표화되어 링지스라는 ‘대상 a’로 부상되지만 육체적 욕망이 달성되는 순간, 그녀를 괴롭혔던 고통도 사라지고 주이 상스로서의 ‘대상a’도 사라지게 된다. 즉 ‘대상a’에 가까이 갈수록 욕망은 충족되는 것이 아니라 또 다른 ‘불쾌’를 경험하게 되며 이는 결국 죽음충동으로까지 이어진다. 결국 ‘대상a’와의 실질적인 접촉을 통해 실재계도 실체가 없는 텅 빈 공백이었음을 인식하게 된다.
Abstract
『Sophie’s Diary』is a mid-length novel that records the sexual impulses and distress that a young woman named Sophie, who is convalescing from pulmonary tuberculosis, feels fascinated by a handsome man named ‘Lingis’ in a diary form. This study is aimed to grasp the truth of Sophie’s neurosis through Lacan’s concepts of ‘desire,’ ‘pleasure,’ and ‘jouissance (enjoyment)’ clearly and to find out the meaning of ‘real desire’ and freedom pursued by 24-year-old Dingling in the 1920s. Lacan’s jouissance means pleasure coming from a sexual object in dictionary, but it is the concept that is essentially differentiated from pleasure and transcends it. ‘Sophie’s Diary’ can be seen as a record of desire and distress, and ironically, through the displeasure from ‘delay of desire’, Sophie rather acquires ‘pleasure’ in some sense. Pulmonary tuberculosis is more like a ‘persona’ for her to enjoy her own time and space being freed from the reality full of strict laws in the symbolic world and gain special attention and enjoy her status in human relations. This is because the interest and love obtained from the disease of pulmonary tuberculosis rather than the ‘displeasure’ resulted from it become ‘pleasure’ as a way to enjoy the relations ultimately. Also, in 『Sophie’s Diary』, she seems to desire a man named Lingis superficially, but her real desire is towards not a man but ‘death impulses’ beyond sexual pleasure. ‘Lingis’ conforms to jouissance, the power of treason and desire to overthrow to move from the symbolic world to the real world. In other words, the desire castrated in the symbolic world is marked with the images of metaphor and substitution and emerges as ‘object a’ named Lingis; however, once the physical desire is achieved, the pain that has bothered her and ‘object a’ as jouissance disappear. To wit, as she gets closer to ‘object a’, her desire is not satisfied, but she gets to experience another ‘displeasure’, which leads to death impulse eventually. Consequently, through practical contact with ‘object a’, it is recognized that the real world is also an empty void without substance.
